The Coach & Horses is a traditional pub located at the southern end of West Park, just five minutes from Harrogate town centre. This well-known establishment is a popular destination due to the wide selection of hand-pulled ales, tasty food and great service.

The Challenge

As the pub is located on a stretch of West Park that over looks the Stray, it made sense to have seating outside for customers to enjoy the sunshine. However due to restrictions standard tables and chairs were not a viable option as they could potentially cause obstruction to pedestrians.

The Solution

Powell Joinery were commissioned to custom-manufacture two solid oak folding bench seats.

The benches are fixed to the front façade using 150mm coach bolts, four folding brackets each with a weight capacity of 226kg and retractable legs to offer additional support to the front of the building.

When in use the seats protrude far enough from the wall to allow for the full-bloom window baskets. On an evening they fold flush against the wall and are secured with a chain.

To achieve a traditional and durable finish the benches were hand stained in Morrells Light Oak Omnia preserve, then sprayed with two coats of Omnia clear top coat with a 30% Sheen.
